I believe SMARTY have to use two-factor authentication when you sign-in to your account because they store your payment card details online.
It's possible the SMARTY app could be designed differently though, but the SMARTY app is relatively new compared to the SMARTY online account portal.

They rely on a cookie being stored on your device.... I asked this very question last week, but didn't get a logical reply...
Annoying isn't it ? 🙄

I use the iOS version of the SMARTY app, which I leave running on my iPhone.
It appears to work, although occasionally selecting something in the "You" section of the app requires re-authentication, i.e. sign-in with 2FA.
What was the web chat explanation for 2FA being needed for every app sign-in?
Personally, I don't trust the SMART app - I've discovered and reported some bugs to SMARTY, which haven't been fixed yet.
