I too am going to Australia in a couple of weeks and would like to know what's best for calls and texts to UK

I visited Australia in November of this year. I purchased a PAYG SIM from Vodaphone for 20 AUD (about £10). That gave me 45Gb of data over 28 days, unlimited calls and texts in Australia and 500 mins international calls that included call to UK. I believe I got a special offer on the 20AUD price, but the normal price was still only 30AUD (about £16), which I think is still excellent value.

@KevanRei_726285  Very helpful information - thank you!

You would need to buy an addon to use the data cap for roaming (Australia is also on the opposite side of the world). The data addon for roaming grants you with the 12GB allowance you'd normally get when travelling in free roam countries like Spain.

Just back from NSW, despite buying an add on didn't get a signal from either Telstra, Optus or Vodafone using Smarty. You're better buying a SIM out there.

Did you try a local SIM yourself while you were there?

@Cowesrhino  I often wonder if the problem lies with the fact that data costs 10p per megabyte when roaming in Australia. If you put on, say £10 credit, then this is used up within a very short time and it appears as if you are not getting service.
