I’ve just started with Smarty and ported my old number from Vodafone. Do Smarty automatically cancel your contract with your old provider?

@MarkMoo_2543559 No because any contract you may have with the old provider is a matter between you and them.
They will request transfer of your number from the old provider and this could result in your old sim becoming inoperative. The problem is that if you are in a contract with the old provider, this does not cancel it.

Okay @MarkMoo_2543559, if you have asked Vodafone for a PAC, then used the PAC with SMARTY to move the number you want to keep (from Vodafone to SMARTY), your old Vodafone account is closed and the contract ended, usually the day after your switch.
On the day your PAC is processed, the old provider disconnects you from their network, which effectively terminates your old contract. OFCOM have banned old providers from charging for any notice period after the switch date.

@Chalkychap Just concerned that, if you use a PAC code say halfway through a 12 month contract, then you may be liable for the remaining payments until end of contract = termination fee.

Indeed, that's true @MSF.
Perhaps that's why OFCOM mandate that whenever a customer requests a PAC or STAC, the service provider must also include important information – such as any charges they have to pay, if leaving their minimum term contract early (early termination fee); or their credit balance, if they're PAYG.
If someone was still within the minimum term of their contract, then using a PAC or STAC may not be a good solution.
