I did not realise I was signing up to a plan. I only wanted to buy the device so that I could then buy either an Italian of Portuguese SIM card when in these two countries. I tried the Smarty card and it does not work. Plus your customer service is terrible

You didn't buy the device from smarty, so not sure why you think that you are in a 'plan'. With Smarty, the 'contract' is only for a month and there is no obligation to continue after that.
I'm pretty sure that you need to be in the UK in order to activate a Smarty sim in the first place - perhaps that's why it doesn't work?
