SIM Card Sent to My Housemate — How Did Smarty Get Their Name?

Hi everyone,

I’m a bit concerned — a SIM card from Smarty was sent to my address, but it was addressed to my housemate by name. I never ordered a SIM for them, and I never shared their name with Smarty. This feels like a breach of privacy or some kind of data misuse.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Could Smarty explain how they obtained my housemate’s name and why a SIM was sent to them without their request or consent?

I’d really appreciate any help or explanation. Thank you.

@Foz_Bi  Firstly, you are not writing to Smarty directly here - we are customers like you on the Forum.

How do you know that they did not get the housemate's name by some other means - perhaps s/he actually requested a sim via a third party website? It could have been requested by someone else for instance.

If you are certain that you did not give the information, I fail to see how any breach of privacy/data misuse involves you.

If the housemate is concerned and is seeking an explanation, then they can contact Smarty via web chat to ask how this has happened. I wouldn't expect that Smarty would discuss it with you as you are not the person named (security?)

Thanks for the clarification. I actually asked my housemate, and it turns out she did order the SIM herself—so that explains it. I was just initially confused as I wasn’t aware she’d done that. Appreciate the insight though, all sorted now!

@Foz_Bi  Thanks for explaining what happened. It is good when people come back like that - it certainly means that other people will not need to worry needlessly about their data.
