A few weeks ago I was on a late night train, moderately quiet in our carriage except for a group of young men that were harassing a young woman who was on her own.
Having tried to intervene, I was threatened and told to sit down/mind my own business.
I tried to send a text to the British Transport Police, but as they use a short code (61016) this was not possible! I wasnโt able to discretely call them as I felt that would have been noticed.
Fortunately, the woman managed to make a dash out the door at the next station and was not followed, but I was left very concerned that because of SMARTYโs failure to implement a now common feature, something terrible could happen another time.
People should be made more aware that as a network, SMARTY isnโt fully fit for purpose and cannot be depended on. I asked when theyโd introduce short code testing nearly 2 years ago and despite the annoyance, I have persisted until this point. Now I realise it could be dangerous for me (or other members of the public) to stay on this network.

@BrianMcBriany You do make a very good point here. Unfortunately it seems that Smarty doesnโt see it that way. The question is asked very regularly.
Was there no way to move to another carriage and call 999?
