See It, Say It, Sorted - Unless you’re using SMARTY 😡
A few weeks ago I was on a late night train, moderately quiet in our carriage except for a group of young men that were harassing a young woman who was on her own. Having tried to intervene, I was threatened and told to sit down/mind my own business. I tried to send a text to the British Transport Police, but as they use a short code (61016) this was not possible! I wasn’t able to discretely call them as I felt that would have been noticed. Fortunately, the woman managed to make a dash out the door at the next station and was not followed, but I was left very concerned that because of SMARTY’s failure to implement a now common feature, something terrible could happen another time. People should be made more aware that as a network, SMARTY isn’t fully fit for purpose and cannot be depended on. I asked when they’d introduce short code testing nearly 2 years ago and despite the annoyance, I have persisted until this point. Now I realise it could be dangerous for me (or other members of the public) to stay on this network.736Views1like1CommentRe: Significant delay in voice calling - both on wifi and without.
I’m having this issue too on an iPhone 15 Pro, with full 5G signal or using WiFi calling. Brand new SIM. im really anxious for a fix. I’ve tried logging a support call via chat, the staff didn’t really seem to understand and just closed the ticket after a few weeks.13KViews0likes1CommentRe: [Announcement] BIG NEWS: You can now text shortcodes! 🎉
MSF Thanks for the reply. Yes I understand the why, I’m just looking for an update. This should be considered a high priority fault/outage as being able to respond to banks or doctors through SMS is increasingly common and essential.27KViews1like1CommentRe: No VOIP access
I don’t have an answer for you but just wanted to make a few points: - The access provided via the SIM allows for tethering and I personally know one or two people also using them as a general internet access (4G/5G backup) in their router (Draytek). If there’s some sort of block in place preventing VOIP traffic, I feel that should be clear/presented up front on sign up. If they are blocking, does it fall foul of net neutrality guidance/regs? - Could there be an issue with temporarily issued IP/cgnat addressing? Might be worth some googling. - Could there be a router setting to be changed? I know my Orbi setup has a few VOIP options to play with.2.1KViews0likes1CommentRe: [Announcement] BIG NEWS: You can now text shortcodes! 🎉
Thanks but I still feel you’re downplaying the significance here. Have you tried to ring your GP surgery lately? Sometimes texts are the only way to communicate with essential service providers. If this isn’t yet considered a basic and fundamental right of communication by the regulators, I’m pretty certain it soon will be.35KViews5likes1CommentRe: [Announcement] BIG NEWS: You can now text shortcodes! 🎉
Hi George, I have an urgent text from my bank (60303) which I must respond to. It’s a free number. Naturally after a bit of googling I've discovered this thread and I’m pretty shocked you don’t allow this feature. It’s essential to be able to text these numbers as often they’re important fraud checks or healthcare related. Please can you advise when the problem will be rectified? Please can you make sure this issue is highlighted to new customers before sign-up, as you could indirectly cause people financial hardship (couldn’t approve a bill payment) or a risk to a persons health (couldn’t accept a GP appointment). I look forward to an appropriate response in a reasonable time frame. It would be a shame to involve ASA/regulators, but I’m concerned you’re missing the point on just how vital this facility is.
