Asking for payment when I change payment method?

My debit card expires at the end of the month so had a reminder text from Smarty to update my payment method. The new card's number is the same, just a new expiry date and CVV number.

When I go into my account and select the option to add a new payment method, I enter my new card details but Smarty then goes on to charge me £6 (my monthly plan amount). It's not due for another few weeks though, so why is it doing this?

Do I even need to update my card details at all given that the number is the same on the new card?

You have to do an authorisation and it shows you'll be charged, but it doesn't actually take the money until the plan renewal date.

Just changed my card on my own account and it showed like that for the bank verification code but then didn't actually come out my account.
