Calling issue

Rookie non tech here,

I'm having to send my pixel 7a away for replacement battery and have tried transferring my Smarty sim to my old phone, Sony XA2, and although I can do and access most things I cannot use it to make calls. I can call through Whatsapp so not a complete disaster but any suggestions greatly appreciated as to why normal calling method doesn't work?
