Will A Data Sim allow WiFi calls?

I have a TP-Link MiFi unit that I mostly use for data. I'm thinking of getting a Smarty data only sim, would I be able to place WiFi calls through that MiFi unit with a Smarty data sim? I'll be using my phone purely in its WiFi mode.

I have searched the forum, but it seems like this may be an unusual use case.

In my experience yes I am able to make and receive WiFi calling calls.

Where I live there is service all around from all networks but downstairs I have negligible signal from all. I have a Smarty sim in a 3 router upstairs which provides WiFi throughout the house, when at home I set the phone to airplane mode with WiFi turned on which forces WiFi calling (otherwise it seems to flip flop between the two and ultimately there’s a chance that neither works well).

Use this for the best deal

Thanks for the responses. After some testing of my own, I've found that I if I put my phone into airplane mode it turns off all the radios, and turning off mobile data doesn't stop calls if I'm in range of a tower.

I may try using an old phone with no sim card installed.

Thanks for the Answer The_ASH. You've also given me even greater knowledge as I didn't realise airplane mode would still allow WiFi traffic.

Now I need to do more testing, and I'll check out the deal you linked to, thank you again.

Thanks for your reply MSF, your answer makes sense.

Maybe I need a data sim in my phone and a normal sim in the MiFi. I may have to do some testing over the next week.

I'll keep checking to see if anyone else has any knowledge of doing this.

TonyHolden Although I am not certain, my feeling is that you will NOT be able to do that.

Wifi calling kicks in when standard mobile call signal is not adequate for the job. As your sim will not be provisioned for mobile calls, then I do not see this option being operative.

Anyone with better knowledge, please feel free to come in on this!
