novice iphone user, old! needs help

I've bought an iphone 17E. to take across my number, I had to sign up to three.co.uk. I've moved my sim card across but there is no phone use. I'd like to stay with Smarty. What do i need to do?

thanks - I appreciate you engaging here....on reflection i think i just registered with Three - and i have no sim from them.  I was following the steps on the apple i phone I visited the mobile man for help in getting the phone part of the iphone to work (i did manage to get across all my apps and data).   He did simply put the Smarty SIM into my new phone.

janicel_2783448 For clarity.....you only have the one sim and it is a Smarty sim? Your Account Dashboard when you log in shows an active sim and also a current Smarty plan?

If that's the case, your sim should certainly work in this new phone without problem. Have you tried the good old fashioned measure of turning it off and then back on again? This often prompts the phone to register to the network correctly.

Did mobile phone shop not check it for you then? Or was it a freebie assistance?

the local mobile man moved across my sim card from smarty into my new phone.....so i thought that would mean that my number was already across?

I went back to the mobile man in the high street, and saw his brother. he couldnt understand either why the sim card was in the new i phone but not working. For some cash (£40) I left it with him and when I went back 30 minutes later he had it up and working. He said the settings were for an e sim......not the physical one placed in there. Relief here - as far as I can tell one day later I have a fully functioning phone.   Need to think of a better way of doing it in 5-7 years time (or longer?) when i have to do it all over again.  Us oldies are not happy with the built in obsolesence of these things and need a lot of service support - I'll bear the latter in mind when I choose both hardware and provider next time.   Meanwhile, thanks for your help guru MSF.  happy dayz X

janicel_2783448 Glad you got it sorted. A simple settings error! I shouldn't be surprised if in 5 years time we have done away with physical sim and only have esim. I do use one when roaming outside the EU and find it works well (I just flip between sims in my Settings)

£40 for a few minutes fiddling about? Cheeky, but I guess he would say that it's £10 for the work but £30 for knowing how to do it!!!

I still would advise you to check out the situation re: Three network. Are you paying them a monthly contract to include the phone? Could it be that they set up the phone with an esim and that is why your settings were using it as priority sim rather than the physical sim? If so, your Settings>Mobile Data>Sims should show the two sims (one esim from Three plus one Physical from Smarty))

janicel_2783448 I'm a bit confused now.....also old!! If the local mobile man moved your sim, had you already signed up to Three before that? I'm effectively asking why you needed to visit him.

If you simply put the Smarty sim into this phone, it should be working. Have you checked on your Smarty account to see that it is showing a current smarty plan and also an activated sim?

Did the phone work with the Three sim in it before he changed your sim over?

janicel_2783448 If you signed up with Three, then didn't they give you a sim (either a physical one or else and e-sim) that has a number on their network?

If you 'signed up' with Three, then you'll be paying them for the contract each month I assume - if you bought the phone outright you wouldn't need to sign up. Were you aware that you were signing up to some monthly contract?

You can put your Smarty sim into the phone and carry on with Smarty, but it seems like you will be paying Smarty for your plan and also Three for the contract.

If you are now unfortunately in a contract with Three, you could ask Smarty for a PAC code and transfer you number across to Three. As the two networks use same masts, you should have a similar service.
