since changing to smarty i am no longer able to send photos in a text message, why is this?

Your APN settings are probably wrong for MMS.
We can't post links on here but if you look through the support section you can find what to set them as
petermc_3012164 SMS text messages are subject to a limit of about 300kilobytes.
