Living for a year in Italy - what is the most convenient plan of action?

I will be shortly moving to Italy for a year then returning to the UK. I am required to have an Italian mobile number so I won't be using my current number. Can I just stop my plan until I come back and reactivate my SMARTY number?

    gsurfer04 You can turn off auto renew in your dashboard and will only need to spend some money at least once every 220 days in order to keep the sim alive. You should get a warning email after 180 days.
