I can't add him at the moment as it is saying his account is now closed

Jacquel_2528093 There is no help number. If he moved away from Smarty, then I guess his account was closed.
Advice as given by @MichaelIP should allow him to start afresh and then get a PAC code from his old network and port in his number to the new account. You can invite him to join your group once he has activated a new sim and has a plan.
