KevinMcC_636297 Firstly, you definitely cannot run up a bill with Smarty. If you do not have something included in your plan and you don't have pre-paid credit on the account to pay for it - it won't work - simples!!
Out of plan credit stays on your account and can always be used for your next Smarty plan purchase.

Yes, I did this myself in March, prior to a trip to the USA.
As I didn’t actually use the add on during my trip, I was then able to convert the monetary cost of the add on to my account balance, to be used for my next monthly plan.
