I am a pensioner so don't use the phone often but I heard landlines will be coming to an end so smarty was the answer but each month I will have a surplus, do I pay for a top up every month or can I carry this over?

JanetHo_1694435 As Chalkychap says, the plans last for one month and do not carry over.
If you use very little in terms of data, you may find a Data Discount Plan suits your needs. Take a look at plans here: https://smarty.co.uk/all-plans
Your SMARTY allowances won't carry over, JanetHo_1694435.
After one month you'd need to buy a new plan, to carry on using your mobile phone + SMARTY SIM.
You also have the option to setup auto-renewal for your SMARTY account, which would avoid having to remember to buy a new plan each month.
