Vodafone Mifi and Smarty Sim unable to connect

Hi. Have bought a Vodafone Mifi Router and installed a Smarty Sim but am unable to connect to it - I believe it's unlocked and all connection lights on the router show it working. It doesn't show up in my list of WiFi connections on my phone or laptop so am not able to connect to open admin page to change APN etc. Any ideas please?
