Strange Roaming Charges outside EU.

I'm in Switzerland, so have an Out-of-Plan add on for me and my wife's numbers to cover usage there.

At 1.00am on several days we both have a charge labelled "Call from". But with no information. Exactly 1:00 am each time. The first was for £6.44 (at a time we were in France, so should be covered by the inclusive EU roaming.

Anyone know what these are? Or had the same issue?

    MYSTERY SOLVED.

This seems to be down to the the Smarty Android phone app giving misleading info.

My question about the lack of information was based on my looking on the app.  The regular daily charges are all time stamped at 1am, and the only info they provide says "Call from".

Looking at my account via a PC web browser gives me more realistic data.

    1. The charges are NOT incurred at 1:00 am, they relate to the whole day's out-of-plan usage.
    2. The browser view tells me these are all data use charges. They tell me how much data and the cost reflects the Smarty Price Guide.  My mysterious £6.44 on 2 Jan was only a mystery because they said it was at 1:00 am.  Later that day I was in Switzerland and did use a chunk on mobile data.

If anyone from Smarty (or their AI) sees this, please fix what is shown in the Android App. I'll go and give it a 2 start rating in the Play store now.  It's an easy change:  Change the text "Call from" to "Data used in the day", and change the time stamp from 1:00am to 11:59pm.

IanHept_3555446 Although you were in France, is there a chance that your phones have stuck with an available Swiss network?

Have you considered using a data Esim and making calls via WhatsApp where possible? Also with an Esim such as Roamless, you can make standard calls (non WhatsApp) via their in app service if the other party does not do WhatsApp.

Might save a bob or two?

Thanks.  At 1am on 2 Jan I was asleep at least 400km from Switzerland (or any other non-EU country), so no chance my phone picked up a Swiss Network.

And I dont mind paying the charges when in Switzerland, since my usage is low via mobile.  Mostly I am on a good wifi network.

My question was to find out if anyone knows what on earth these anonymous charges are. Smarty provide NO info other than a statement saying "Call from" and timed at 1:00am on the Smarty App

(EDIT See separate reply to my own post with an answer to my mystery)
