People I'm calling complain I keep cutting out. Am I getting Wifi calling?
Have finally worked it out! Even though Wifi calling is enabled, my phone is always using the signal from the mobile mast to make the call, even if that signal is very weak, hence the poor sound quality. After trying everything else, I switched my phone to airplane mode, making sure the Wifi was switched on. This disconnected my cellular signal to the mast, and thus forced my phone to use Wifi calling. All I have to do then is remember to switch airplane mode off when I leave the house, so that I can use the mobile signal as usual to make and receive calls.
I also get this, I have a Pixel 8a and my partner has a Samsung S9 (both phones have WiFi Calling), we both have this. There is an attrociaously weak mobile signal where we live and WiFi Calling is essential, but mid call we have our phones drop audio and we just hear the other end saying "can you hear me" etc, but they cannot hear us. This is very frustrating especially when we're on calls to 111.
Apparently the ability to switch Prefer WiFi Calling (and have control) is a network feature, which is disabled on SMARTY/Three, apparently the only UK operator to support this is EE.
I did some googling and wit appears that the workaround is as DavidB-3335558 said to turn on airplane mode then specifically enable wifi (and bluetooth?). A quick google suggested that I can automate this via the Google Home App ... so I'll try that.
I only get a couple of bars - even though it's supposed to be good coverage - and most times I'm on a call for a while it will disconnect - not poor sound quality but the call drops and has to be re-dialled. I'd assumed the phone would always use WIFI Calling when indoors but maybe not reading this - switching to Airplane mode has been mentioned over the years to force WiFi calling - certainly better than suggestions to restart the phone or router.
It's worth noting that with Android - on a Pixel at least - it remembers if you enable WIFI or BT in Airplane mode for next time - so it's one less thing to change each time - just leaves remembering to turn off Airplane mode afterwards.
