Porting Number no SMS using Google messenger

Just in case anyone else has this problem.

I'm using Android and Google messaging

I moved my EE number to smarty and SMS messages just wouldn't work, calls and data were ok but no SMS.

I tried everything like network reset/reset phone but when opened Google messages and then settings it kept showing the old temporary smarty number.

If you don't mind losing all your messages just go to settings / apps, delete all data and cache for the messaging app (SMS app not Facebook/messenger)

Then restart the phone or just the app and ported number should be in use 

I thought it was a problem with smarty/EE but it was the Google messages app.

I wanted to keep my messages so I installed another message app, made it default app so it copied over messages, then cleared data on googles app, then opened that and made it default app again so it copied my messages back, then deleted new app.
