iMessage sending as text message not iMessage

Hi 

I installed my sim today and everything seems to be working ok but when i try to iMessage it is sending the messages as texts (coming up as green speech bubble rather than blue). 

I have checked my settings and iMessage is switched on. I’m not sure why this is happening can anyone help?

    This can happen when the recipient is not connected to the internet at all e.g. not via wifi or mobile data.

    I just experienced this issue. I turned off iMessage and turned it back on, but that didn’t help. I had to delete the existing chat and only then once a new message was received did it come through as an iMessage.
