Had my new sim in for 5 hours and still not connected. Is this usual?

Check your phone does not have dual sims? you could be on the wrong network.
The other problem maybe that it can sometimes take upto 24 hours to get the sim activated on the network.

Have you activated your SIM via the smarty app orr webpage?

I got through to a chat and had used the wrong sim. It was a 50/50 chance I guess. Thanks anyway.

You can try to ask for a replacement SIM (there could be a charge for this), and delivery times may vary.
