Data sim

I have bought a data sim for my small mifi device . Now I’m getting asked for my phone number to get the SIM card going . I just want this for data and obviously not txts. I don’t want to change phone network provider . Or does smarty think I want to change ?? Or have I messed up buying this sim thinking it was just for data , confused
