Re: Externally Accessible Public IP address.
I am the OP, I can confirm this need is still ongoing (and growing) Since my original post I've now got a second data connection to a router in the car, so three SIMs including my phone and home. I would like to be able to route between these devices using their IP (or DDNS like no-ip) without relying on a 3rd party system like tailscale, or requiring to pay for a hosted server somewhere external to my network to route the traffic. I would also like to access these from the general internet to access self hosted services like my Plex and Nextcloud. Next year we a looking at getting a camper van..... you see where this is going! 😄 As I said before, I would be prepared to pay a small premium to add this to my package.8KViews0likes1CommentRe: Home portable router
Assuming "portable home router" means a home router connecting via the mobile network, I can suggest the Huawei H112-370 for use in the UK. In Leicestershie I'm currently getting ~600Mb/s down and 32 Mb/s up on both Ethernet to my laptop and and WiFi 6 to my phone (Ookla speed test at time of writing this response) Hope this helps.21KViews1like0CommentsExternally Accessible Public IP address.
I have services running on my home network that I would like to be able to access from outside my home (local smart home, SSH access, NAS, OpenVPN Server Etc). I run the necessary equipment (I work in IT) but the Smarty service IP does not route back to my connection ether via a DDNS service or by directly entering it. Sometimes it's even an IP on the reserved "local" range of 10.x.x.x While I appreciate many mobile customers would not require this, there are many who are unable to get a "traditional" wired internet service and use this as their primary home/business internet service who would. I would be happy to pay an extra pound or two for a routable dynamic IPv4, and a little more for a static one I could use in bridge mode. If this was available I could recommend this for a number of personal/business applications to my friends, family and customers. Am I alone on this? Can anyone think of other use cases that would make it a viable service for Smarty to provide?12KViews5likes12CommentsRe: Notifications only arrive when connected to wifi
I don't have direct experience with the Pixel phone, but on my Samsung Galaxy phone a recent android system update caused a similar issue in some apps. E.g. a comms app used for work would still function but not alert be to new messages, diary entries etc. It added additional settings/permissions for individual apps restricting what they could use GSM to do and defaulted to WIFI only as the connection was considered to be "metered" In Android settings I was able to set the mobile data not to be considered "metered", and then permit the notifications to come through on an app by app basis. Hope this helps!15KViews0likes5CommentsRe: Using a router abroad
Hi, Assuming you are using a data sim that is valid in the country in question, then check the router you wish to use supports the frequency bands and standards of the networks/countries you want to connect with. Some info here: https://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html There are different bands and sub bands for 4G and 5G, of course don't confuse this wit the 5G WIFI compatability! As an example, the Huawei h112-37x 4G/5G unlocked routers differ mainly on channel band support. The more bands, the more countries/networks it will work with. All you would need to do is swap to a local carrier SIM if your Smarty package isn't available and roaming isn't an option. This is the main consideration as this is a broad question, hope it helps point you in the right direction for further research for your particular circumstances.8.5KViews3likes1Comment
