New to the community and smarty.When adding an additional sim -What’s  the difference to a child or family sim?

There is a group SIM where the first SIM manages and pays for the other SIMs you can have up to 8 in total which you can give to your child (family) 

With The parentshield 

Your just stating who it's for in reality 

Child SIMs have over 18 data turned off all SIMs do at the start with there being no difference

@Lgraham  I strongly recommend that you read this article first: https://help.smarty.co.uk/en/articles/3417277-what-is-a-group-plan and then read the 'spin-off' articles that come from it explaining the features.

Basically, if you add someone as a 'nickname' sim, then you remain in total control and do not need to start a separate account with a different email (Some people have a second sim for another device and this is a useful way to manage both). The other option is to start someone with their own account (and their email address) and then invite them to join your group.
