phone says i am not registered - have had smarty plan for some months. Also in sim manager only data is active calls and text greyed out

Are you in the Midlands area where SMARTY Mobile have turned-off their 3G network, @peterha_1958309?
Without a 4G capable handset with VoLTE support, calls and texts won't work in this area.

If this is because the 3G network has been turned off in your area (which happened recently in the Midlands) then just search 'VoLTE' and you will see many, MANY posts with regards to this problem. It may be that your device isn't supported by SMARTY and if so you may have to change to a provider that does, unless you can afford to purchase a SMARTY supported phone to stay with them.
