How do I use my phone for free on a cruise?

You cannot use it for free while the ship is sailing away from land out of reach of standard EU mobile signals. Most cruise ships seem to now use satellite marine networks and they will charge huge money and you'll need add on credit on your account to pay for it.
While in the EU countries, you can make calls and send texts as when at home; you can use to 12Gb of data out of your plan allowance while EU roaming. Take a look at the Smarty Price Guide p17-p19 specifically:

Many cruise ships now offer free wifi and so you can use apps such as WhatsApp to call others who also use the app.
