My wife and I ( both have smarty accounts) will be spending february and march in new zealand. What do we need to do to use smarty there?

You would need to purchase an out of plan add-on and to change the APN settings on your phone, here are the full details for roaming https://bit.ly/3jUzoTM
It may well be worth also investigating purchasing local SIMs on NZ networks.
