Sharing my sim and plan

Hello. My son is about to be given one of our old phones to use in emergencies. I have a plan and never use half my allowances and wondered if my son could use my plan but on his own phone. Am I able to get a 2nd sim so he can use my allowances or will I have to just go pay as you go type thing. Thank you
