If you have an eSIM compatible phone, you can install an eSIM from a specialist travel eSIM provider like Sparks, Airalo or Holafly, who offer data only eSIMs at reasonable prices. You can use WhatsApp to call and message people then. Videos reviewing Airalo etc are available on YouTube.
If you phone is unlocked, you also have the option to buy a physical SIM card in your destination country.
