The best hack/bargain I had was buying my mifi box and putting a Smarty sim into it. When I’m travelling in my Motorhome, I don’t have to hotspot from my phone, I can just use that for my work computer, and iPad. 
when we are abroad, we pop a local SIM card into it and away we go with no extra charges.
