Re: Smarty sim not working in Australia
That is interesting - actually great - news. I was in Australia at the beginning of the year and, like you, couldn't use my Smarty sim, which was infuriating as so many UK companies now insist on 2FA and most only offer the mobile phone text option, so I was unable to access bank accounts etc. while away I posted on several threads on the subject on the Smarty forum (nobody seems to manage threads, so similar issues do not get merged) but got no useful info. My wife has the same phone (iPhone 12) as me. Her PAYG O2 sim worked fine in Australia. What I should have done, but regrettably didn't, was put her sim in my phone to verify it wasn't purely a phone issue. Smarty claim that it's an iPhone issue, but if it is/was an iPhone-related issue, it seems to be an issue that mainly affects iPhone users with a Smarty sim! I'm returning to Australia for a couple of months early next year, and cannot afford to have 2FA problems again, so was, just a minute ago checking out Lebara sims, when I thought I'd do one last trawl to see if there was any updated information on the Smarty problem, and came across your post. I've now followed that up and Smarty has just confirmed, in response to my direct question, that the issue is resolved, and Apple themselves (but only on their Australian site) have said, in the release notes for iOS26.2, that it ... "addresses a mobile network issue for iPhone 12 models when establishing a connection to emergency services in Australia" Hopefully that is the end of the saga!35Views1like0CommentsRe: SMARTY SIM in Australian Iphone not working
Having googled this again yesterday, it seems that the majority of UK users having problems roaming in Australia since the 3G switch-off are smarty users, but also there have been few reports of this problem since March. What is not clear is whether this is 100% a Smarty problem (i.e. no Smarty users with any kind of 'phone can get their Smarty sim working in Australia), or whether it is a combination of 'phone type/age and Smarty. As I reported earlier my Smarty sim fitted in my iPhone 12 wouldn't work in Australia but my wife's O2 sim fitted in her same-age iPhone worked fine. It would be good to hear from any Smarty users that have successfully used their Smarty sims in Australia in 2025, with info on the phones used..318Views0likes1CommentRe: Australia
Smarty sims still don't seem to work on iPhones in Australia, so can't be used for 2 factor authentication etc. This is a real problem if you need to contact your bank etc. Using an esim for data (and even calls on some esims) works fine, but 2FA responses are always made to your UK sim, so you're stuffed!405Views0likes0CommentsRe: No service in Austalia
Unfortunately neither a PAYG local sim or an esim will work for 2FA, and that is the crux of the matter. If Smarty can't resolve the issue, then I will have to change my primary sim provider to one whose sims will successfully roam in Australia. Some institutions allow 2FA by email or Whatsapp, but not my bank, sadly!3.3KViews0likes1CommentRe: No Service Abroad
I've certainly got enough out of plan credit on my smarty sim. Unfortunately, while I agree that what you suggest would definitively prove whether the issue is down to Smarty or not, there are too many other settings other than mob.asm.net that would need changing for me to risk doing what you suggest on her 'phone.4.5KViews0likes1CommentRe: No Service Abroad
As I have said on most of the other threads covering this topic, my wife has an identical phone to me; all relevant settings are the same. Her UK sim is O2, mine is Smarty. Her UK sim works fine, mine doesn't. This to me makes it clear this is a Smarty issue rather than a phone issue. The fact that 3 offer Australian roaming on their UK sims isn't really relevant, as they're undoubtedly not selling their top-of-the-line service to Smarty. Smarty need to pull their finger out and sort this out!4.5KViews0likes1Comment
